Message from the President -

I was in Publix the other day and ran into a friend I met at a Newcomers' meeting shortly after moving to Gainesville five years ago. About a year later she dropped her Newcomers' membership because, she and her husband had moved into a socially active community and really no longer needed Newcomers'. Well, life has this unpleasant side to it sometimes, in that, it is always changing and for my friend, her life has taken some pretty dramatic changes over the past four years.

But let's get back to that Publix meeting. She asked about my presidency with Newcomers', how it was going and how much longer I had to serve. Then she said something many of have heard before:"Letting my membership expire was one of the biggest mistakes I ever made."

Earlier in this Board's tenure, we seriously discussed and considered offering a one-time amnesty to those who have dropped out of our group and now want back in. After much discussion, this Board unanimously agreed to not do it for a variety of reasons I won't cover here. Here is the point of this message: it's that time of the year again to renew our memberships. Don't let yours lapse because you think you no longer need the club. Life and circumstances are always changing. I also want to point out that at our August meeting we will be installing our 50th president and celebrating our club's golden anniversary with invited past presidents and founders! Please plan to be with us at this very special event.

Summertime Picnic
Chef Matthew returns for another summer cooking demonstration. We are going to have a very casual, summer picnic themed luncheon. The master gardeners will add to the program with tips for your summer outdoor settings. We will also have the election of our 2010-2011 officers. Seating is limited to the first 100 to sign up.
